Tow Doctor™ Circuit Tester - Vehicle Side

Item Number: HOP50918    Supplier: HOPKINS MANUFACTURING CORPORATION

Description

The Hopkins® Tow Doctor™ is designed so that one person can make sure that their wiring has been installed correctly.  After the tow vehicle has been wired for towing, the Tow Doctor should be used to determine if the wiring has been installed correctly and that all functions are working.

The Tow Doctor has been supplied with a test readout module and three adapters. Each of the adapters is approximately one foot long and has a connector on each end. One end of each of the adapters has a seven pin flat connector and the other end has on of the common connectors used for trailer towing. The test readout module consists of the LED test lights and a seven pin flat connector with a 20 ft. cable in between. The test readout module has seven LED test lights, one for each possible wiring function. Each LED test light is labeled with the function in represents. The Ground Error LED will light when the vehicle ground is not connected or is not wired correctly. The other LED test lights will activate when testing their corresponding function. Use the following steps to check your completed wiring:

  1. Select the proper adapter for your socket on the back of the vehicle
  2. Plug the adapter's seven pin connector into the mating connector from the test readout center
  3. Plug the adapter into the trailer socket on the vehicle
  4. Now that the Tow Doctor has been properly connected, apply the brake, turn signals, and other vehicle functions. The LED test lights on the test readout module should match the corresponding function being tested.

NOTE: The labeling of the LED test lights has been designed for the most popular wiring code. However, other codes can be tested by substituting one LED test light with another. The Tow Doctor has been equipped with resistors that simulate the load that a trailer would put on the vehicle's wiring system. If the vehicle's turn signals blink at a faster rate than normal, it may be necessary to replace the vehicle's flasher with a "heavy duty" flasher.
